My Breast Cancer Story
From realization and acceptance to fighting and winning
Realization
My life was seemingly going well, and all seemed hunky-dory until I noticed a lump on my left breast sometime in 2018. I was quite in a state of shock and confusion at the same time, as I could not wrap my head around it. I could not, and I did not even mention it to anyone, nor did I have the courage to follow through with necessary medical inquiries and screening. It was in early 2019 that I initiated the process by going for a mammogram. The outcome was quite hazy and inconclusive. One of my very close sisters, when I told her about it, immediately swung into action and encouraged me to go for a comprehensive screening with a biopsy.
The biopsy result revealed the state of the lump as being malignant and in stage 2. My whole world came crashing down around me before my very eyes. It was such a numbing and overwhelming feeling at the same time. But I am quite privileged and blessed because I was not left alone to wallow in misery and shock of the reality before me, which I needed to confront immediately. My sister and her family rose up to the task like a rock of solid support, building up an immediate support base for me and surrounding me with so much love, prayers, and encouragement.
Acceptance
The encouragement and support from my loved ones gave me the audacity to make up my mind to seek immediate medical intervention. I engaged the oncologist on how the process would be, and she also encouraged me to develop the attitude of a combatant that is bent on winning a duel at any and at all costs. I squared my shoulders, and with confidence in God’s mercy and the love and support of my loved ones, I went in for the sessions of chemotherapy for several months, with a mastectomy at some point. At the end of which, a full radiotherapy session was embarked upon for 25 days.
Fighting
I was doing very well thereafter, but routine check-ups showed the disease was trying to rear up its ugly head again in the bones. Unfortunately, the CT scans were not clear enough to determine the next line of action. A series of tests done thereafter were not quite clear, as most of the equipment used were a bit obsolete. I was not making any progress with the process any more. At this point, my loved ones called for a meeting and encouraged me to go abroad for further evaluation and advanced breast cancer treatment. I was informed about a place in India where I could get more comprehensive tests and treatment, which I eventually followed up with.
Winning
Finally, after doing some research and talking to my friends and relatives, I decided to travel to India for my breast cancer treatment. I arrived in the city of Bangalore, India, in early 2023. The city has excellent flight connectivity from Africa via major middle-eastern cities like Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, etc. From airport pick-up to hospital appointments, everything was arranged for me just to make sure that I don’t have to wait anywhere for anything.
On the first day, I underwent a comprehensive investigative process comprising a battery of lab and imaging tests. This was done using highly advanced equipment and well-trained professionals under the guidance of one of the leading breast cancer specialists in India. And it made me quite comfortable. The results came out in just 48 hours. With all the results out, the way forward was immediately mapped out. This was done by my treating senior breast cancer specialist along with a multidisciplinary team of experts.
Treatment commenced immediately, and I courageously, by God’s grace, followed through with the chemotherapy sessions that had been planned for months. Now, for any breast cancer patient, going through a long treatment isn’t an easy process! But with sheer dogged and unbending determination, a large dose of ‘can-do attitude’ and God’s grace, it became doable! My treating senior breast cancer specialist, consultant oncologist, and hospital staff made my treatment journey a lot smoother.
Finally, mission accomplished! At the end of the whole process, I am standing triumphantly victorious, thanks to the mercies and goodness of God, over this scourge in great health and wellbeing. The professional assistance and synergy between the senior oncologist, consultant oncologist, and their team and the other hospital workforce helped me access the best patient-friendly care.
